The edition

This is the European (PAL) edition of the PlayStation 2 version, which runs at 50 frames a second. Retrario's emulator plays it in full, menus and whole matches with the game's sound, on your computer's processor in the browser; nothing is streamed as video.

Play alone or with two on one computer

Press Play on the hub and the game starts; no account is needed. Two people can share one computer: Settings › Players gives each of the two seats a device, the keyboard or a gamepad.

Play online with a friend

Each of you runs the game in your own browser, and Retrario keeps the two games in step frame by frame over a direct link between the two browsers. A match needs:

The whole flow is on Play online.

Controls

On the keyboard, the arrow keys move; X is Cross, C is Circle, S is Square, D is Triangle, and Enter is Start. The shoulder buttons sit on R, F, T and G. Xbox and PlayStation pads work through the browser: press a button once so the page sees the pad. Every key can be changed in Settings › Controls; the full table is on Controls.

Questions

Is it free to play?

Yes. Retrario asks for no payment and no subscription, and the page shows no ads.

Do I need an account?

Not to play alone or with two people on one computer. Online matches need a Retrario account: a username, an email address and a password.

Is my progress kept?

No, not between visits. The game saves to its memory card as on the console, but here that card lives in the page's memory: closing or reloading the tab empties it. Online matches always start from empty memory cards on both computers.

Why Chrome or Edge?

The emulator runs on several threads that share memory, which needs cross-origin isolation and SharedArrayBuffer. Retrario is built and tested on Chrome and Edge; other browsers get a notice.

Can I play on a phone?

No. Phones and tablets cannot keep the game at 50 frames a second, and the app says so before the first start. A computer with more than 4 cores and 8 GB of memory is the target; see the requirements.
